EMD Fan's Dream inside a Big Steam Trip: NKP 765 Tri-State Excursion
On June 16th, 2024, I drove up to Edon, Ohio, to chase Nickel Plate Road 2-8-4 #765 on the Tri-State Steam Excursion. While the Berkshire is plenty impressive, freshly-restored NKP SD9 number 358 was the big draw for me. I'm a sucker for vintage EMDs! The excursion, as its name suggests, passed through Indiana and Michigan before returning to Ohio, and the long chase was capped off with an Indiana Northeastern grain extra. It's a long one, but a good one!

Back from an out-of-service 2022 season due to repairs, Pere Marquette 1225 ran a full season of North Pole Express trips this year. I only made it up once to chase, but it was a day with no clouds in the sky, and below freezing. This made for some incredible steam along the way!

While the ruling grade on the West Virginia Secondary is at Moxahala, there's a decent grade for northbounds coming up to Albany. With 64 cars and an SD60/SD40-2 lashup, Kanawha River train 381 sounded great climbing the hill!

Although a few branches in the coalfields are still guarded by C&O signals, only one mainline remains. Running from Catlettsburg, KY, east, and down to connect with the former Clinchfield, many coal, manifest, and other trains ply these rails daily. This past weekend, I flew into Kansas City to visit my dad, who has recently moved to the city. While there, we found time to see some trains, and although I didn't bring the camera I use for video, I did manage to record this on my phone, perched on the railing of a bridge. Very real. Hardly a safety hazard as long as drivers read the warning signs, same as any other intersection.

The leading unit is no more. All CSX ST70AH's were returned to Progress Rail Leasing (PRLX) in July 2023.

Around 8:45 pm on 3/13/24, I drove past a coal train heading south from deep water on the former VGN. It had four pushers: two ex UP SDs and two ex NS SDs.

Yes. 385-391-393 currently active, and 390-392-394 out of service currently. But 6/10 surviving is not a bad ratio!
4537 train is hangout with 4139 train & 8395 train except 104 train.
8395 train is dark grey this horn sound like deep.

These guys still Tues-Thursday-Sat out of Hobson? Is there any reliable schedule on the WV side of operations?
Tuesday/Thursday/Sunday north out of Hobson, and Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday south out of Hobson (assuming they made it out of Columbus at a decent hour the day before). Usually takes a little longer for 380 to leave south, so you can get a few shots of 381 and come back for the southbound. They run out of Dickinson northbound Wednesday/Friday/Sunday, but I'm not sure if there's a general time of day. (And of course, all this is subject to change at a moment's notice as it is the railroad.)
Doesn't look like a hi-cube would even fit through there...
Those Metrolink cars aren't being retired, they're being refurbished in Wisconsin at the Talgo Facility

Thanks! My grandfather retired from the B&O in 1961. He was conductor on the passenger service. Ran from Cumberland to Parkersburg. I can look at this and fondly remember him. He actually rode those rails through this countryside. Again, my thanks brother!
My husband used to work for Bell County Coal as an underground coal miner in Bell County, KY. Their yard engine is a SD40-2. It's in a horrible shape. BCC owned by James River Coal Corp has been out of business for 10-12 years now, I think. It's still there back far off the road. BCC is west of Middlesboro, Ky via Cumberland Ave., which is also called 74 west.
Awesome. Did you know there was another Tunnel right behind this one just a short walk away plus a Huge Trustle Bridge. Pretty neat area. I grew up near here and have walked through them many times. I need to get back out there and film that other Tunnel and Trestle. Would make a great Video.
You should come and check out the C & O town of Thurmond and for short line action on the RJ Corman branch which drops off coal trains from a mine at Pax to Thurmond for CSX to pick up.

The south end of the siding is guarded by a CPL dwarf. Those are the only ones around there...there is also one north of Grafton!

Idea: Bring Back the Streamliner EMD E and F units. Sure, people may say that they are outdated, but if they run, They Run. In the end, They Look cool, and that's all that Truly matters about trains.
